Why is Friday the 13th bringing bad luck?
The origins of Friday the 13th and beliefs
* As we saw in the following article: 13 at the table, the Christian religion does not carry in its heart the number 13. Jesus was judged and crucified on Good Friday, after Judas, thirteenth apostle betrayed him.
Also in The Bible, the Devil tempted Eve on a Friday, when she tasted the forbidden fruit.
* Cain, a character from the Bible and the Koran, killed his brother Abel on a Friday.
* Herod massacred the innocent on a Friday.
* In the 4th century BC, Philip II of Macedonia added his statue to that of the 12 Gods. He was assassinated shortly after.
* Adam and Eve were expelled from the Garden of Eden on a Friday.
* The great flood that preceded the launch of Noah’s Ark on the waves started on a Friday.
* The Temple of Solomon would have been destroyed on a Friday.
* According to the Christians, the satanic ceremonies count 13 presences: A Devil and twelve witches. Among the witches are Frigga, Nordic goddess of love and fertility, who was banished after the invasion and conversion to Christianity of the Germanic and Nordic peoples. She was sent to the top of a mountain and considered a witch from that day. Since then, it is said that every Friday, the goddess would summon the Devil and eleven witches to prepare her bad turns the following week.
* Note that ‘ Friday‘ is a day banned by the Bible. It is not written anywhere: neither in the New nor in the Old Testament. It is replaced by the designation’ sixth day‘.
The origins and history of Friday the 13th
The superstition of Friday the 13th comes, in France, from the Friday October 13th, 1307. All the Templars were arrested as Philippe le Bel ordered. According to legend, Jacques de Molay, the Grand Master, launched a curse by uttering at the stake: ‘you will all be cursed until the thirteenth generation!‘ after these words.
In Maurice Druon’s novel ‘Les Rois Maudits‘, this story was popularized.
For the Greeks and Romans.
* The 12 is the number of the perfection. Note that there are 12 works of Hercules, 12 constellations, 12 Olympian gods, 12 hours per day and 12 hours per night, 12 zodiac signs, 12 moon in the year … The number 13 destroys the balance : it causes disorder.
* In Ancient Rome, the executions took place on Friday.
The superstition has remained in the news and there are many hotels without room no 13, planes without row 13, streets without, 13, restaurants without table n°13 … Obviously, the world of the cinema was largely inspired by the Friday 13. (Film ‘Friday 13’ for example, inspired by the myth of the misfortune).
